“Janissaries were boys taken from the Christian provinces of southeastern Europe, raised as Muslims, and trained as elite soldiers.”  My World History  p.465

“Taken” Kidnapped is the real word that should be used. And in most cases, these young boys -under nine years of age- were stolen  as a forced payment for protection from persecution.  Many of the Janissaries, as boys, were castrated, and others were made the objects of sodomy by their captives.  More truth to come.
